When it helps: When an urge (to use, to text them, to slam the door, to undo progress) is loud and claims it will last forever.
When it doesn't: Not a substitute for a safety plan when acting on the urge would be dangerous. We build that separately, in session.
This tool is for clients
It needs a therapeutic relationship to be used well, so it opens with a passphrase. You receive it in session. Nothing is being sold behind this door.
An urge feels like a rising tide that will swallow everything unless you obey it. In practice it behaves more like a wave: it builds, it crests, it falls, if you don’t feed it with either obedience or struggle. Surfing means staying present with the urge, in the body, until it passes. We’ve practiced this in session; the timer below walks you through it at home, with a before-and-after intensity check so you can see what the wave actually did.
Urges typically crest within minutes when they aren't fed. The timer isn't magic: it just keeps you company across the crest.
0 = barely there · 10 = overwhelming
