When it helps: When your head has left the room (spiraling, dissociating, panic climbing) and you need a rope back to where your body actually is.
When it doesn't: It's not for processing feelings. It's for landing. Process later, on purpose, with support if needed.
Anxiety lives in the future; panic lives in a body that thinks it’s somewhere dangerous. This exercise walks your attention back to the present through the five senses: five things you can see, four you can touch, three you can hear, two you can smell, one you can taste. Slowly. There is no score and no way to do it wrong.
It feels almost insultingly simple. That's fine: it borrows your attention through your senses, and attention can only be in one place at a time.
This walks you through your five senses, one at a time. There's no clock and no wrong pace. Look around wherever you are. It works in a parking lot as well as in a park.
