Self-compassion break

When it helps: In a moment you're being hard on yourself: a mistake, a setback, a wave of not-enough.

When it doesn't: It isn't about excusing things or pretending they're fine. It's about not adding cruelty to difficulty.

Three short lines, borrowed from Kristin Neff’s work, for a moment when you’re suffering and your first instinct is to turn on yourself. Say them in your own words. A hand on your chest often helps.

  1. This is a hard moment. A plain acknowledgement: this hurts. Naming it beats pretending it doesn’t.

  2. Hard moments are part of being human. You are not uniquely broken or uniquely at fault. Everyone alive meets this; you’re in very large company.

  3. May I be kind to myself right now. Offer yourself the sentence you’d offer a friend (“may I give myself what I need”, “may I go easy on myself”) and mean it as best you can.

That’s the whole practice. It doesn’t fix the situation; it changes who’s facing it: a friend at your side rather than a critic at your back.

Talking to yourself kindly feels false at first, especially if you're not used to it. Do it anyway; the effect doesn't wait for you to believe it.
